Hedi Slimane, Celine’s creative director, recently confirmed that the fashion house will present during Men’s Fashion Week Paris in January 2019. Slimane gave the world a preview of what he was planning when he introduced menswear into the Celine Spring/Summer 2019 collection that showed at Paris Fashion Week in September. The decision to join the men’s shows makes perfect sense for the fashion house’s new direction under Slimane, especially since the designer launched Dior Homme and redefined Saint Laurent’s menswear as its current chic, rock-and-roll look.
Slimane is known for making himself at home at the current fashion house under his direction, unafraid to shake up the status quo. The winds of change that seem to fuel Slimane were already apparent in the glamorous, sexed-up look he reimagined for Celine Spring/Summer 2019. The men’s looks featured in the collection were a continuation of Slimane’s slim tailoring and clean, grunge suiting that he popularized at Dior Homme and Saint Laurent. At Celine, however, the creative director combined his vision with the fashion house’s established sense of androgyny by announcing that the men’s looks were designed to be completely unisex, meaning that the streamlined suit jackets, trim trousers, and leather outerwear are available for women to shop as well.
In anticipation of the Celine collection at Men’s Fashion Week Paris, expect more of the same androgynous aesthetic, blending modern tailoring with an urban, youthful look. Even though we’ve seen it from Slimane before, this Parisian idea of dressing up still seems fresh and relevant to today.END
