Beyond the Trend: Hair Bows

START

A hair bow can solve a bad hair day–and they’ve been doing so for centuries. While hair adornments date back to ancient times, the first widely recorded instance of the hair bow didn’t come until the 16th century. In the 1590s, the trend became popular among men who wanted to show their loyalty to a woman by wearing their hair in a lovelock, which would be tied with a ribbon. Both ornamental and practical, women also began sporting bows in their hair to keep it off their faces. As men’s hairstyles became shorter as the centuries progressed, however, the accessory fell out of fashion for them and was predominantly considered a women’s trend by the 1800s. Since then, bows have been associated with femininity and girlhood. Young starlets, pop icons, and current catwalks alike have all showcased the versatile knot, proving the hair bow’s timelessness. Click through to discover the origins and iterations of the accessory, from the French monarchy to modern runways.
