Nowadays we pick our comfiest pieces possible when anticipating air travel, but at the start of the Jet Age in the mid-’40s, in-flight glamour was the standard for passengers and attendants. The design of airline hostess uniforms was crucial, not only did they signify the distinct role of the wearer in the workplace, but they also projected an airline’s identity while reflecting en vogue trends of the time. In a unique blend of professional and made-to-measure fashions, many of the top couturiers and designers were tasked with creating uniforms for major airlines of the day that added to the luxurious experiences for flyers. Before sweats and slides took over air travel–and before a global pandemic made jet setting a mere fantasy–designer airline uniforms shaped the history of in-fight fashion.
