While women successfully crossed the sartorial gender line long ago, and have stepped everywhere from Sunday brunch to the red carpet in trousers without a second glance, a man in a dress continues to generate major attention—for better or for worse. While a woman in a suit is powerful, strong, and to be taken seriously, a man in a gown somehow risks appearing the complete opposite. While this in itself is a reflection of archaic gender roles and harmful stereotypes, every time a man zips up a dress he opens the conversation that maybe masculinity is more fluid, personal, and multifaceted than we’ve been raised to believe. Although the stigma surrounding gender norms both on and off the runway has progressed over the past few years, men have ditched slacks for the freedom and movement of frocks for centuries.
