Renaissance-Inspired Fashion on the Runway

START

A flourishing period of European culture, the Renaissance promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature, and art. Bridging the gap between the Middle Ages and modern-day civilization, artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael (whose believed birthday is today) thrived during this era, producing works that introduced new artistic techniques while portraying a mixture of realism and naturalism. Religious themes were often a focus of the artwork, as the Catholic church commissioned the High Renaissance masters to create frescos for the Vatican. Along with this, portraiture done by the artists preserves the fashion of the times. With this rich historical portfolio, many designers have been inspired by the works of Renaissance artists over the years. From Madonna and child motifs to opulent 16th century-inspired bodices, puffed sleeves, ruffles, doublets, and clerical robes, the runway has seen a number of fashions influenced by the cultural milieu of the Renaissance.
