Net-a-Porter Adopts a New Fur-Free Policy

START body

The Yoox Net-a-Porter Group (YNAP) is continuing to make major strides in their stance towards sustainability. Just today, the Group announced that it’s embracing a fur-free policy, one that excludes all items containing animal fur from its e-commerce sites which include Net-a-Porter, Mr Porter, Yoox, and The Outnet. The announcement comes in the wake of the conglomerate’s 2016 Sustainability Report, which outlined its strategies for a greater environmental awareness.

The new fur-free policy coincides with YNAP’s existing relationship with The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International, and Lega Anti Vivisezione. Coinciding in the news, the Group has also joined forces with the Fur Free Alliance’s international Fur Free Program, which seeks to protect animal and environmental rights.

Head of Sustainability for Yoox, Matteo James Moroni, said the following in a statement regarding the initiative:

“We have a strong sense of responsibility and recognise the importance of making a positive contribution to society. With a range of initiatives, partnerships, and innovations, our goal is to act as an industry-wide catalyst for change.”

The news comes as consumers become increasingly aware of the impacts that the clothing industry has on the environment. No longer maligned to a granola hippie image, ethical and sustainably sourced and produced fashion collections continue tighten their hold on the industry. Fur, which was once considered the example par none of luxury, has become less popular as customers become more informed. Already, major name brands like Armani have pledged to no longer use it anywhere in its collections.

By advocating for sustainable fashion, the Yoox Net-a-Porter Group acts as an example for other e-commerce sites to place animal and environmental rights at the top of the priority list. Doubtless its announcement today will inspire its peers to at least consider what adopting a similar policy might do for their business.

Other brand that have pledged to the fur free initiative include longtime vegetarian, Stella McCartney, Giorgio Armani, and other high street brands like ASOS and Topshop. For a full list, visit www.humanesociety.org.
