Earlier this month, we reported that plans were being made for a massive block party to fete the hotly-anticipated release of Louis Vuitton’s Supreme collaboration. Subject to community board approval, the drop would’ve taken place over the course of four days in Manhattan’s Nolita neighborhood. There were no details given about the festivities, but Supreme was asking to shut down an entire city block. It seems that whatever plans they had have just been foiled.
Supreme petitioned the board for a permit to throw a massive event on Bond Street, a quiet side street in the otherwise bustling and trendy neighborhood. The community board unanimously denied the permit request. Five residents of Bond Street and local business owners were on hand at a public hearing to express their outrage at the proposed event, which they said would’ve caused chaos. Supreme estimated it would only draw 1,000 people, which seems conservative in light of how much hype surrounds the release.
The residents raised concerns about hundreds of fans and resellers sleeping on the streets, waiting to get their hands on the collection’s red monogramed bags, shoes, and accessories. They also were unsettled by the risk of public urination, because Supreme failed to plan for any bathroom facilities. Handicap residents also spoke out against it, saying they would be unable to get in and out of their homes.
Supreme and other streetwear brands in the neighborhood have had repeated issues with their release events getting out of hand, and sometimes even violent. The cult label’s weekly drops cause long lines that congest the Soho sidewalks regularly and have been shut down by police many times. Though Supreme said they would have barriers and over twenty security guards for this occasion, the resident’s concerns were not assuaged.
In their decision the board members wrote Supreme failed to “articulate how this product launch will benefit the community in any way.” There’s no word yet on what the alternate release plan is, but for now, Supreme’s epic block party plan has been pooped.END
