Louis Vuitton has unveiled its Spring 2017 campaign, dedicated to creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s favorite literary hero. In it, house muses Michelle Williams, Jennifer Connelly, Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Sasha Lane take on the role of French poet Louis Aragon, who was famed for spearheading the surrealist movement in Paris in the early 1920s. Captured by Bruce Weber, Ghesquière tasked each woman to reimagine the vibrant energy of Aragon in a whitewashed studio and around some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
“Paris is the soul of this collection, with its Right Bank / Left Bank duality,” explained the designer in a press release. “Paris is nourished by all artistic influences. It is to this cultivated, intellectual, original and free-spirited Parisienne that I wanted to pay tribute.”
While it’s unlikely that LV is trying to make a larger political statement, there’s a second layer of commentary to the ads which is interesting given the current political climate. Today, the leaders of America, Britain, and France seem to be leaning ever-more to the right and—in contrast—Ghesquière’s idol, Aragon was a life-long left-wing supporter and vocal opposer of fascism.
