Imran Amed, Business of Fashion’s founder and editor-in-chief, is pioneering a new movement to increase inclusivity throughout Fashion Month. The project—titled #TiedTogether—invites the global community to tie a white bandana around their wrist, neck, head, or handbag and upload an image of it to social media. Using the project’s title as the hashtag to spread the message, Amed hopes participants will also tag a friend to show how we are all tied together as family, neighbors, and human beings.
“As the fashion industry embarks on a month-long circuit of women’s shows amidst growing uncertainty and a dangerous narrative peddling division, BoF invites you, the global fashion community, to join the #TiedTogether movement and make a clear statement in support of solidarity, human unity and inclusiveness,” wrote Amed in an open letter on BoF. “In fashion, visuals often speak louder than words. So join together this Fashion Month to make a simple and singular visual statement: wear a white bandana as a sign to the world that you believe in the common bonds of humankind — regardless of race, sexuality, gender or religion.”
On the site, Amed also outlines how fashion industry professionals can use their power to help maximize the message: He hopes that street style photographers will hone in and shoot those wearing white bandanas, editors will include those images in their weekly roundups, and that models and designers will wear a bandana in their final bow, to castings, and in-between shows.
The news follows an initiative to highlight the vital importance of Planned Parenthood launched by the CFDA on Monday. The American fashion organization rolled out thousands of pink magnetic pins to all participating NYFW designers, model agencies, PR firms, creative teams, notable influencers, and key members of the press in the hope that recipients will wear the pin throughout the course of the week, using the hashtag #IStandwithPP to spread the message on social media.END
