After much speculation, Givenchy has confirmed Clare Waight Keller as its new artistic director. The British designer will take on all creative responsibilities, including women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, and haute couture. Waight Keller is the first woman to be appointed to this position at the house, which was founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy. Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy’s previous artistic director, departed in February following 12 year at its helm.
“The teams join me in warmly welcoming Clare Waight Keller into the Givenchy family,” said Givenchy CEO, Philippe Fortunato in a statement. “I am very excited to see Clare bring her singular sense of elegance and modernity to Givenchy. By exploring our Maison’s 65 year heritage and the outstanding Savoir-Faire of its Ateliers, I am convinced Clare will help Givenchy reach its full potential.”
In the same statement Waight Keller added: “Hubert de Givenchy’s confident style has always been an inspiration and I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this legendary House’s history. I look forward to working with the teams and writing a new chapter in this beautiful story.”
The news comes less than two months after the designer resigned from the same role at Chloé. Her appointment is effective as of May 2, 2017 and she will present her first collection for Givenchy in October in Paris for Spring 2018.END
