Two of Saint Laurent’s Fall 2017 ads have caused a firestorm of controversy on social media, leading France’s leading advertising watchdog to weigh in. The campaign came to the attention of monitoring group Autorité de Régulation Professionnelle de la Publicité (ARPP) after they received over 50 official complaints from the members of the public who allege that the images are degrading to women and could be damaging to the psyche of young girls. Of the ads targeted, one features a model clad in fishnets and roller skates, posed with her legs spread wide. The other portrays a model (also wearing roller skates), bent suggestively over a stool. Beyond the imagery, another concern raised is that the models in the adverts are too thin.
There’s yet to be a statement from Saint Laurent on the matter, but this isn’t the first time the house has gotten in the crosshairs of media censors. In 2015 under Hedi Slimane’s reign, a Saint Laurent ad was banned in the U.K. because the model’s rib cage was visibly showing.
France’s Advertising Ethics Jury will convene with the house on Friday to determine the validity of the complaints and determine if Saint Laurent must retract the two controversial images in totality.END
