Tom Ford and Lonely Whale’s 52HZ, an organization revolved around creating transformations in the world, teamed up to create the next iteration of the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize, a competition set out to create and utilize alternatives to thin-film plastic. Thin-film plastic, including plastic polybags commonly used in the fashion industry, accounts for 46% of the approximated 14 million metric tons of plastic on the floor of the ocean. With a prize of over million, Tom Ford and 52HZ plan to devoting three years to aiding the finalists in reaching scale and market adoption by 2025, bring in committed investors, partnerships, and brands.
The panel of judges includes specialists in a diverse range of fields with Don Cheadle, Livia Firth, and Stella McCartney. Just announced to join are llen Jackowski, Chief Impact Officer and Head of Sustainable Impact at HP Inc., James Andrews, Founder of Authenticated Ventures, John John Florence, two-time World Champion Surfer and Olympian, and Steven Kolb, Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Fashion Designers America.
“The support provided through the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize will prove vital to accelerating safe material alternatives to petroleum-based plastics that are so detrimental to the ocean, the land, and our climate. If we are to reach our climate and waste ambition, we need new packaging solutions now,” said Kolb.
Many partners already pledged to participate in a trail implementing the alternatives created by finalists for their brands packaging. Early buyers include Tom Ford International, Stella McCartney, Dell Technologies, GoSili, HP Inc, Herman Miller, Imperial Dade, LeClub and ROQ.
Submissions, open now until October 24th, call for inventors, innovators, designers, and entrepreneurs who desire to make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. Finalists will be announced in early 2022. The Tom Ford Plastic Innovation has already received over 170 applications from 39 countries and six continents.
