Over the course of the past year, the fashion world has witnessed a shocking resurgence of a most unlikely era: the early 2000s. The biggest Y2K trends, including trucker hats, scarf tops, and Ed Hardy tees, have returned in full force on Instagram and runways alike. However, for their Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Miu Miu experimented with perhaps the most controversial trend of the era: low rise bottoms.
With her latest show for her younger sister company, Creative Director Miuccia Prada aptly combined this infamous waistline with house classics and current trends. A series of extra low-rise mini skirts made their way down the runway, reminding viewers of Christina Aguilera’s unforgettable ultra-mini skirt from the 2002 VMAs. These skirts were paired with cropped knits and collared shirts, exaggerating the depth of the rise. At the same time, low-rise trousers and shorts appeared numerous times, taking the early 2000s trend away from Aguilera’s “Dirrty” aesthetic and into more formal suiting.
Signature house embellishments also featured heavily throughout the show. A light green midi dress with green and white beading provided a sense of timeless glamour to the collection. Likewise, a black sleeveless mini dress with black embellishments was simple, yet effective and classic. A delicate pink skirt suit with yellow and white beading simultaneously played on the brand’s pension for sparkle and shine and the predominately Y2K theme of the collection.
Current trends also made an appearance on the runway. Baggy blazers and coats tapped into the present obsession with the oversized and classic tailoring. At the same time, Prada featured several large, cozy knits. The coolest and most luxurious example of these was an oversized green sweater and matching skirt that was equal parts nonchalant and chic.
Despite playing heavily into the Y2K low-rise trend, Miu Miu’s latest collection was still multifaceted. Equal parts referential, timeless, and trendy, it shows that Miuccia Prada’s versatility is virtually unmatched. Her ability to stay true to the house while exploring both past and present styles in fun and chic way proves this and, at the same time, ensures the longstanding Prada name continues to stay at the fore of the industry.
