Twiggy, is that you? Maria Grassi Chiuri has officially called it: the ‘60s are back. Dior’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection transported the world to the peak of mod, a paramount fashion era bursting with vinyl and fringe.
Go-go boots, sleek shift dresses, and an almost rudimentary color scheme lined the topsy-turvy set curated by artist Anna Paparatti. Dior’s entire show happened in reverse, shocking onlookers by presenting all looks at the start of the show and peeling off one by one. Like clockwork, models steadily shifted as if the room was spinning. A cluster of disco balls turned the venue into a discotheque… minus the dancing.
Perhaps Dior now has an additional “New Look”: scuba and nylon. In keeping with the theme, a majority of the maison’s designs looped in sporty fabrics. Silhouettes to accompany the textiles resurrected the golden age of Mary Quant. But of course, an obligatory finale of gowns returned Dior to their coeur, delicate bows and full skirts of tulle.
Color was evidently the center of attention, despite no particular hue’s supremacy. Pops of lime green, bold orange, bright pink, lemon yellow, cherry red, and royal blue ensured that every shade of the rainbow was showcased. Monochrome, contrasted, or color-blocked. Shiny co-ords in full boxer style, à la Rocky, popped alongside bold prints showcasing leopards (a ’60s leopard print obsession revival that PETA would approve).
Marc Bohan was cited as inspiration, Dior’s Creative Director through the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s following Yves Saint Laurent. Specifically, his adored “Slim Look” collection of 1961. Parallels are striking, aside from the modern twist and shortened hemlines by Chiuri.
Dior’s awakening of a rich archival period was delightfully aspirational. Much like today, the ’60s was a period of great change in fashion and beyond. Chiuri’s eclectic take on the era’s mod styles resulted in a sublime celebration of color re-entering our world.
