Off-White™’s Fall/Winter 2021 co-ed collection “Laboratory of Fun” was revealed during Paris Haute Couture week. The star-studded see-now-buy-now runway collection is immediately available to purchase in Off-White™ boutiques and on the label’s website.

This season, label designer Virgil Abloh explored the intersection of ergonomic engineering and clothes-making. “This collection speaks in part to my roots as an architect,” says Abloh. “It signifies an evolution of the Off-White™ approach, continuing to blur the lines between creative disciplines and inspirations. It’s about pushing the aesthetic forward into a novel, highly explorable space.”

The collection’s title and runway garments are odes to iconic architectural creations of the past. “Laboratory of Fun” is titled after architect Cedric Price’s 1961 “Fun Palace”, albeit unfinished, “Fun Palace” was Abloh’s inspiration behind creating this season’s creative, collegiate and abstractly commercial space. Garments are aesthetically linear and structure-driven. The collection features elongated tailoring, precision silhouettes, and mostly monochromatic looks. Tailored blazers have sharp-cut shoulders and single-creased sleeves. Trouser and Bermuda shapes are boxy and roomy, while outerwear and select evening pieces are sewn with new Dieter Rams press studs (manufactured for Off-White™ by COBRAX).

Both the womenswear and menswear components are anchored in a color palette drawn from Rams’ oeuvre at Braun: shades of gray, neutrals, and slightly attenuated mid-century-style oranges, blues and yellows trickle throughout. These colors are excitingly translated into the models’ makeup looks. The accessories narrative at “Laboratory of Fun” revolves around spacious carriers, often with colorful, contrasting chain straps. Chunky boots and needle-thin heels bring dynamism to the soft rigor of the clothing, while polychrome sunglasses impart an eccentric touch.

For the runway presentation, Virgil Abloh enlisted the appearance of friend and Grammy-winning artist M.I.A. The artist’s daring and youthful performance mirrored the spirit of Off-White™ perfectly. “She’s an artist that’s known for speaking her stance on global issues and I wanted to make a safe space for her to do her art and pair it together with what Off-White™ stands for. It’s about representing a young generation, it’s not about selling clothes,” said Abloh with an interview with WWD.
