Christopher John Rogers dresses have dropped at Target in a limited-edition collaboration with the retailer as part of the second installment of its Designer Dress Capsule.
Last year’s inaugural launch featured an all-female lineup of designers: Cushnie, Lisa Marie Fernandez, and LoveShackFancy. This year, CJR was tapped to design for the retailer among fellow contemporary womenswear designers ALEXIS and RIXO in a spring collection of statement dresses, which dropped in-stores and online on May 16th.
The capsule consists of 75 exclusive dresses in the most inclusive range of sizing Target has ever released, from XXS-4X, and ranges from -, inviting everyone to feel both expensive and priceless this season.
CJR’s leg of the collection delivers on his signature punchy colors, unique color blocking, and structured feminine silhouettes, without compromising on quality. His dresses vary in length, print, and fabric, giving the masses plenty of options for their reinstated summer occasions. Whether it’s bright gingham, happy florals, flattering chevrons, mixed stripes, puff sleeves, iridescent orange, or two-toned shirt dresses, the one thing the looks have in common, is that they’re going to turn heads at the function.
For the past few months, the designer has been teasing the collection on Twitter, reassuring fans that it’d be one for the books…
CJR is known for adorning powerhouses in his exciting colors, where he dressed Lady Gaga in a duo-chrome “Baja Blast” green silk taffeta look for the 2020 Grammy’s, Rihanna in an “Electric Grapefruit” bodycon dress for a 2019 Fenty Beauty event in Seoul, Korea, and Kamala Harris in striking monochromatic violet at her historic inauguration.
Beloved and based in NYC, CJR was the CFDA Fashion Fund Award recipient in 2019, won the 2020 CFDA award for American Emerging Designer of the Year, and is a semi-finalist for the 2021 LVMH prize. He’s dressed fashion icons from Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Zendaya, and Cardi B, who was the first major celeb to wear CJR— an opulent fur coat from his first collection at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.
CJR is a maestro of both color and cut, and he describes his designs as “emotional & sensitive clothing with a focus on effortful dressing, directed towards an individual with a strong sense of self,” and, through his creations, encourages his customers “to take up space.” And these show-stopping looks from Target are no exception.
Fashion lovers are discovering the bright green Designer Dress Capsule displays in their local Target stores, walking their followers through as they pluck from the rainbow racks, and twirling in their homes as they try on their hauls — it seems no one can leave the store with just one piece. Some are even going back for seconds, while online shoppers are seeing inventory sell out quickly.
The collection nods to CJR’s Southern roots in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was first inspired by dramatic, monochromatic styling he witnessed on Sundays at his Baptist church. His full skirts and polished details are evident in this line, as a new group of customers are being introduced to the magic of CJR for the first time.
In line with the brand’s mission, women are sharing how they style the poppy pieces to suit their own style and individuality.
Wendy Williams, a longtime fan of the designer, was seen wearing two dresses from the Target collection on her talk show in recent weeks, poised in floral green pleats and pink and black striped satin.
It’s not the first time Target’s collaborated with up-and-coming talent either. Iconic fashion names such as Proenza Schouler, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Zac Posen, Prabal Gurung, to name a few, have all created collections with Target in hopes of establishing their brand as a household name. And if history has anything to show for it, it’s only the beginning for CJR.
The buzz is real for this line, so run (don’t walk) to your local Target before it’s gone for good (or resold for triple the price online)!
