This is shaping up to be the year of Pyer Moss. Designer Kerby Jean-Raymond’s brand has been no less than a cultural phenomenon over the years, but it looks like it’s only the start for the American label. After announcing the fashion house would be coming out of their two year hiatus to return to New York Fashion Week in September, Pyer Moss is going to Paris and they’re packing their first Haute Couture collection to go with them.
Jean-Raymond’s first-of-its-kind collection will be presented during Paris Haute Couture as part of the official Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Collections. Along with being the first time Pyer Moss has been invited as a guest designer at Paris Haute Couture, this historic announcement also makes Jean-Raymond the first Black American designer to be invited by the Chambre Syndicale to present during Paris Haute Couture — news the politically-motivated brand doesn’t take lightly.
Pyer Moss was founded in 2013 by Jean-Raymond. Since then, the New York brand has taken pride in its social activism with the designer often using his voice and platform in the fashion industry to challenge social narratives. On top of charitable acts like transforming their New York Office into a Coronavirus donation center, their collections and seasonal drops regularly combine storytelling, activism, debate, theatre, nostalgic themes, and social commentary.
If Jean-Raymond’s Haute Couture collection is anything like their last their Spring/Summer 2020 collection — which addressed the erasure of Black narratives in popular culture, then we are so ready. The calendar for the Haute Couture Collections Fall/Winter 2022 along with further details regarding the Pyer Moss show is expected to be released in the coming few weeks. One thing we do know now, is the invitees won’t have to witness the collection through a screen. The Paris Couture shows have been cleared to be live and in-person this season, so no digital runways here.
This announcement from The Chambre Syndicale only proves that Pyer Moss isn’t going anywhere. From VP Kamala Harris’ suit at the Presidential Inauguration to being expected to be present at September’s Met Gala exhibit, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” this fashion house has quickly become the brand to know.END
