Whoever said New York City is dead might change their mind after seeing Michael Kors’ latest collection.
Michael Kors celebrated the 40th anniversary of his eponymous label with an “Opening Night” theme. Kors’ goal was to inspire a sense of renewed glamour and celebration for all the moments in our lives, whether you’re going into the office or out to dinner with a friend. The Michael Kors Collection is an ode to New York City in all its resilience and slick city opulence.
The color palette includes ivory, fire engine reds, and gunmetal blacks, evocative of the high-contrast, fast-paced city. Kors also includes prints that any confident woman could find in her wardrobe like pinstripes, cheetah print, and houndstooth. Monochrome looks add a graphic element that electrified the whole collection. Luxe cashmere sweaters, dramatic trench coats, and sequins studded gowns embody the elegant yet pushy attitude that makes New York so magical.
Kors also seemed to be inspired by some archival pieces of his own. He’s referenced and updated some looks from his 1990, 1992, and 1998 collections.
These refreshed looks feel modern and classic at the same time. “There’s a sense of timelessness and big-city-optimism that has been a linchpin of Michael Kors since the very beginning – a yin and yang balance between opulence and simplicity, something that’s laid back and at the same time luxurious,” the house explains.
Shot in Times Square and at the iconic Shubert Theatre, Kors wanted to honor Broadway which has been an inspiration for him over the years. To help the theatre community post-pandemic, the Kors company donated to The Actors Fund, which supports a safety net for actors and performers over the course of their lifetime.
Michael Kors certainly called in the who’s who for his latest collection. Models for the show included Bella Hadid, Precious Lee, Ashley Graham, and Irina Shayk. The inimitable Naomi Campbell closed out the show.
With one of the most refreshing shows this Fall/Winter season, Michael Kors Collection honors the drama of New York City (which definitely isn’t dead.)
