Jil Sander’s Creative Directors, Lucie and Luke Meier believe in the power of clothing and the energy that comes from life’s simple offerings. Simple, modern, and minimalist proves to be the overall theme for their Women’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection unveiled today. While they’ve maintained their sophisticated backbone for this Fall collection, the husband and wife duo interjected moments of bright colors, patterns, and eccentric details signifying a fresh excitement to the brand.
In lieu of the runway, Director Stephen Kidd captured six models in a brief fashion film as they travelled through an abandoned building –The subdued, texturized walls fitting perfectly into the collection. Set to a soundtrack by Anika, the overarching theme of ethereal determination manages to be woven into every aspect of this production.
The juxtaposition of soft and hard are apparent not just in the choice of location but visually evident in every aspect of the collection– A pristinely tailored, pistachio suit is paired with a cascade of natural pearls, leather gloves and cosmic boots were paired with the airiness of sheer mesh, trimmed in chenille, and texturized alpaca coats accompanied a lightweight maxi skirt. Within all of their collections, the Meiers have continuously promoted the unapologetic minimalism that Jil Sander herself founded. While sophistication and balanced silhouettes are still abundantly apparent, the coziness and intimacy of home living is a signature that has come to define this new era. Comfortable textiles and intricate embroideries are suddenly paired with structure and attitude for an unconventional combination of style. The accessories themselves even deserve a double take or two. A mini bag made of metallic marbles and jewelry ranging from chunky linked chains to large organic earrings add a distinctive fierceness to the Jil Sander image.
Jil Sander’s controlled but more playful use of design is a starting point to where we can see this brand expanding to be. Just a few days ago, Only The Brave announced it officially acquired 100% of the brand, taking over from Onward Holding. And with this new collection featuring bright Bauhaus-inspired patterns, floral embroideries, and striking colors the cool girl aesthetic seems to be warming up a bit. While this change in ownership and creative direction may seem daunting, it appears the heart of Jil Sander will remain alongside this energetic growth.END
