All The Best Looks From The 2021 Inauguration

START body

The day has finally come, Joe Biden has officially been sworn into office as the 46th President of the United States. Already being a ceremony for monumental firsts, political figures and attendees collectively showed up in a more modernized stylistic approach to official dress. American designers, monochromatic looks, jewel tones, and the usage of color as symbols were ongoing themes throughout this event.

Here are all the best fashion looks from the historic 2021 Inauguration.

Joe Biden

President Joe Biden wears a navy Ralph Lauren suit and topcoat. A fitting pair as the Design House is synonymous with American Fashion.

Biden views the fireworks from the White House for the Inaugural nighttime event entitled Celebrating America. He wears a simple dark navy overcoat and suit paired with a striped tie.

Jill Biden

Dr. Jill Biden sparkles in a custom, ocean blue Markarian coat, dress, and matching silk face mask. The tweed coat, has a dark blue velvet collar and cuffs and is worn over a tapered dress with a chiffon bodice and scalloped skirt. The neckline of the dress is hand embellished with Swarovski pearls and crystals in a delicate floral pattern. The same Swarovski crystals adorn the coat and dress, giving The First Lady a shimmer when the gems reflect the light.

The color blue was chosen for the pieces to signify trust, confidence, and stability. The look was carefully crafted by a small team in the heart of New York City’s Garment Center and hand finished by O’Neill in her West Village studio.

The message of Unity was the main inspiration for Jill Biden’s Inauguration Concert ensemble. A matching Gabriela Hearst coat and silk gown were embroidered with the federal flowers from every state and territory within the U.S. The dress, made of silk wool cady, has the Delaware flower positioned right at the heart of The First Lady and from there, all the other flowers bloom out. The lining of the coat also had a special message, with a hand embroidered quote from Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” All of the pieces were designed in New York City and made from existing fabrics to minimize the environmental impact. Iconic.

Kamala Harris

The Vice President makes a statement by wearing designs from two black designers, Christopher John Rodgers and and Sergio Hudson. She stuns in an ankle length purple coat and blouse. Harris’ choice to wear this shade, along with Obama and Clinton, may have been a calculated choice to symbolize the bipartisanship of the two political parties, since the shade is a combination of blue and red. Her jewelry also proved a powerful choice. The pearl necklace designed by Puerto Rican designer Wildredo Rosado and American flag pin by David Yurman worn together promotes a theme of unity.

At the end of the night, Kamala Harris swapped out her purple look for a black one. Harris wore a floor length, silk tuxedo overcoat on top of a Sergio Hudson sequined dress. The designer kept the look structured and tailored to represent Harris’ strength while the sequins were added to bring in a spark of glamour and shine.

Michelle Obama

Former First Lady Michelle Obama wears a monochromatic look by Black designer, Sergio Hudson. Her ensemble includes a plum jacket with matching sweater and wide leg trousers. Even her belt was coordinated perfectly with eye catching gold hardware.

Nancy Pelosi

House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi wears a similar shade to Dr. Biden, a bright blue coat and scarf combined with navy leathered gloves and a patterned mask.

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton wears a Ralph Lauren purple pantsuit complete with a blazer, trousers, and ruffled scarf underneath a darker plum overcoat. Clinton’s color choice is synonymous with other political figures at the event. The shade notoriously known as a symbol of hope and unity is the unexpected trend we all appreciate.

Laura & George W. Bush

Former First Lady, Laura Bush stayed classic with a subtle plaid dress and a pearl necklace but added a pop of color through a periwinkle coat with black lapels.

George Bush matched his wife’s look with a blue tie and later accessorized with a stylish camel scarf.

Lady Gaga

In rehearsals for her Inauguration performance, Gaga wore a white Givenchy Pre-Fall 2021 cape, white Alaïa mask, and a chunky silver chain along with Giuseppe Zanotti platform boots.

Lady Gaga wore custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture designed by Daniel Roseberry while singing the anthem. A navy cashmere fitted jacket and a red silk faille skirt is accessorized with a gilded dove of peace brooch.

Jennifer Lopez

JLo’s first Chanel look of the day featured a matching set of a houndstooth patterned coat and trousers.

Lopez changed into an all white Chanel ensemble for her Inauguration performance. A color often associated with the women’s suffrage movement. The Silk ruffled high neck blouse, sequined wide leg pant, tweed coat, and jewelry pieces give the singer a well deserved, regality.

Amanda Gorman

Amanda Gorman, the youngest poet to recite at a presidential inauguration wears a bright yellow Prada coat, black skirt, and white blouse while delivering her powerful piece. Gorman accessorized her look with a stylish, red Prada headband. Her jewelry proves special as it was gifted by Oprah, a pair of golf hoop earrings from Nikos Koulis’s Energy Collection as well as a birdcage ring by Of Rare Origin give her that extra flair.

Ella Emhoff

Ella Emhoff, Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter and Parsons textile student stunned in an embellished, strong-shouldered Miu Miu coat with an embroidered, floppy collar. A Loeffler Randall headband and a simple black mask completes her look.

Natalie, Maisy, Finnegan, & Naomi Biden

Blink and you’ll miss them but all four of President Biden’s granddaughters dressed to impress with coordinating monochromatic looks.

Later that night at the Inauguration celebration, Biden’s grandkids once again stunned, this time in sparkles and ruffles, in a combination of Markarian and Rodarte gowns. As for Ashely Biden, her look consists of a chic tux and heels, a contrast to her nieces but still fitting in style with the rest of the First Family.

Eugene Goodman

Officer Eugene Goodman, credited for helping diffuse the Capital attack by barricading himself in front of rioters, accompanied Vice President Harris to the Inauguration. Goodman wears a Gucci scarf and tie, a glow up we love to see.

Terri Sewell

U.S. Representative Terri Sewell arrived at the inauguration in a bedazzled face mask and shield in honor of Harris. Her bright pink and green look is all thanks to her Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sisters.

Tom Hanks

Host for the Evening Inauguration Special, Tom Hanks dressed in a dark suit and gloves while in front of the Lincoln Memorial, for an overall high class look.

Katy Perry

Performing at the National Mall for the Inaugural concert, Perry wore a dramatic custom look designed by Thom Browne and white and gold diamond earrings from American jeweler, Rahaminov. Similar to Lopez, her white cashmere caped coat, duchess silk satin corset, and matching floor length skirt gave a nod to the shade commonly associated to the suffrage movement. While the look itself is stunning on its own, the standout detail comes from the silk satin buttons — navy ones lined her coat and red ones adorned the hem of her skirt. The combination of the colors red, white, and blue pays tribute to the American flag but it can be argued that combining the colors from the respective political parties shows and message of unity.

Demi Lovato

Performing for the virtual evening event, Lovato debuted powder pink hair and dressed in a tan, khaki pantsuit complete with an oversized blazer and high waisted trousers.

Bernie Sanders

Finally, this list wouldn’t be complete without the star of the show. Showing up in a fashion statement of his own, he goes for a more casual approach to the ceremony combining a camel puffer coat with a pair of oversized patterned mitts and a medical mask. His iconic gloves, were made by teacher Jen Ellis from Essex Junction, Vermont from recycled water bottles and repurposed wool sweaters.
