Cruise shows often take place in far-off locales, and for the past few years Louis Vuitton has hosted its runways in as varied places as Kyoto, the French Riviera, and JFK airport. Even as the French fashion house found itself grounded in Paris for Cruise 2021, the new collection continues to capture the spirit of travel. Titled Game On, the roaming, multi-faceted fashion is a journey through design, in which the collection itself serves as a medium of exploration.
For the imagery, Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière embraced the aesthetic of lockdown production, with models posing next to empty clothing racks, ladders, printers, fire extinguishers, and trash cans at the Louis Vuitton headquarters. The stark juxtaposition of the bold, colorful designs against the studio’s industrial backdrop speaks to the collection’s concept, one of a “stationary journey.” Rather than presenting a fantasy of escapism through the house’s usual extravagantly staged runway shows, Ghesquière’s campaign allows the designs themselves to spark the fantasy.
Playing cards are a primary motif for Cruise 2021, printed on the house’s accessories as a representation of the collection’s thematic direction. The clothes themselves emphasize layers and mixed patterns, with classic silhouettes and standout color combinations reigning. The designs also incorporate an element of comfort with leggings, sneakers, sweatpants, and windbreaker jackets making an appearance, perhaps a nod to the lockdown-related surge in loungewear styles.
On the collection, Nicolas Ghesquière said, “I looked somewhere that has been calling out to me for a long time, somewhere I hadn’t taken the time to go back to. To uncover one inspiration after another. This is an exploration of my creative identity.”END
