Moncler announced today that it collaborated with American fashion designer Rick Owens on a capsule collection to be unveiled during Milan Fashion Week. But this Moncler drop won’t be your typical, run-of-the-mill skiwear. Instead, the project involved a customized tour bus for Owens and his wife, Michèle Lamy, to road trip from Los Angeles International Airport to artist Michael Heizer’s ranch in Nevada. Moncler also outfitted the couple for the trip, and the designs, as well as the bus, will be available to purchase.
The idea came to fruition after Heizer had invited Owens and Lamy to see his monumental art installation City located in Hiko, Nevada. A California-native, Owens had not visited the West Coast since moving to Europe 18 years ago and considered it a sort of homecoming. The designer also took inspiration for the trek from not Heizer, but another artist. “I was kind of thinking of Joseph Beuys traveling to the U.S. from Germany in the ’70s,” Owens said. “Landing at JFK, being wrapped in felt and taken by ambulance to his N.Y. gallery to live with a wild coyote for three days in his installation I Like America and America Likes Me, and then going straight back to Germany the same way…”
The tour took the couple through Las Vegas and Area 51 with a stop at Heizer’s Double Negative. After hitting the open road, the custom bus and the clothes Owens and Lamy wore on the trip, will be on display during Milan Fashion Week, from February 19.END
