To the fashion world, a name like Riccardo Tisci needs no introduction. The iconic designer and former creative director of Givenchy, who helmed the women’s, couture, and menswear lines for more than a decade, has cemented himself as a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry by introducing Gothic design and space-age minimalism to the storied French label and launching the house into greater international prominence. Tisci and Carine are also longtime friends, and the designer has collaborated with CR Fashion Book since its inception in 2012.
Throughout Tisci’s time at Givenchy, Carine has been on both sides of the camera, styling and appearing in the brand’s Fall/Winter 2013 campaign alongside her daughter. Although Carine is definitely no stranger to styling high-profile shoots, Givenchy was the first high fashion ad that she herself fronted. Tisci has also expanded his fashion empire to collaborations with Nike and has also worked with Beyoncé and Jay-Z for their “On The Run” tour, as well as dressed CR-star Rihanna for her 2013 “Diamonds World Tour.”
In turn, the designer has worked with CR on several of its most iconic shoots, leading art direction for Kim Kardashian’s first major fashion cover for CR‘s third issue, Beyoncé’s cover for issue five, and Zendaya in our upcoming 12th issue.
A friend of Kanye West, Tisci was the one to come up with the idea of putting Kardashian–who was then pregnant with North—on CR‘s cover, according to Carine. The duo also tapped another longtime collaborator, Karl Lagerfeld, to shoot the photos. “Riccardo is not frightened by Karl,” Carine said. “A lot of people are frightened by Karl—he’s a legend and an icon. But Riccardo is very cool with him. They have fun together.”
It was Tisci too that helmed the creative direction for Beyoncé’s cover for our fifth issue, marking the singer’s first collaboration with Carine. Shot by Pierre Debusscher, the story transforms the star in a way we had never seen before, with Queen Bey donning Comme des Garçons, Saint Laurent, and Prada and penning a poem that appeared alongside the editorials.
In the upcoming issue, Tisci led the creative direction for a cover and film featuring Zendaya, a close friend of the designer. Lensed by Mario Sorrenti, the shoot views the 21-year-old Disney starlet in varying iterations of Hollywood glamour inspired by ’70s performance art. Defying the conventional, an adjoining film depicts Zendaya as different characters, and in one scene she appears completely painted with makeup by Isamaya Ffrench.
A longtime CR collaborator and a legend in his own right, Tisci has continued to bring his creative vision and influence throughout the history of the magazine.END
