Since its unveiling in 2002, Chanel’s highly anticipated Metiers d’Art Show has been guaranteed to be a lavish and star-studded affair, but this year’s collection was different for one notable reason. Throughout Karl Lagerfeld’s three-decade long career at the helm of the French fashion house, the designer has hosted shows across the world in Paris, Milan, Mumbai, and Saltzburg, among many more. Yesterday was the first time Lagerfeld staged a show in his hometown of Hamburg, Germany, spurring speculation that it would mark a symbolic (and literal) end to Lagerfeld’s legendary tenure at Chanel. Here, all of the top moments from the pre-fall show.
Lily-Rose Depp sat front row
The CR cover star sat front row alongside other Chanel favorites including Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton, and Carine. Depp, 18, who is the youngest ever face of Chanel No. 5―and Lagerfeld’s muse of-the-moment―walked arm-in-arm with the designer to take his final bow at the Spring ’17 Haute Couture show.
The collection featured leg warmers and sailor caps
The short-brimmed newsboy caps donned by every model in the show were a direct nod to the nautical inspiration behind the collection. With the show taking place at Hamburg’s newly opened Elbphilharmonie concert hall and one of Germany’s largest structures, the grand orchestra theater was transformed into a lavish runway.
Lagerfeld drew directly from Hamburg’s history as a seafaring port to dress models in knitwear in deep hues of navy blue and rust. Models sported mini skirts and sweaters replete with sailor stripes, while the caps were elevated with jewels and veils. The collection also featured Chanel’s signature tweed fabrications and matching skirt suits, but with the noteworthy addition of knit leg warmers, which gave the models an ultra leggy, 1960s mod look.
Kaia Gerber walked her second Chanel show
Gerber had a breakout inaugural season debuting for Calvin Klein and walking for the greats including Prada and Versace. She also opened the Chanel SS18 show. Yesterday, Gerber walked her second Chanel runway, sporting two looks from the new collection.
The 16-year-old model, who has been heralded for her likeness to her mother and ’90s super Cindy Crawford, donned a navy dress and thigh-high leg warmers for the first look, while transitioning into the cream-colored, tweed dress for the later portion of the show.
Grace Elizabeth closed the show
CR favorite (and Miss January 2018 in CR‘s calendar) closed the show, wearing this tiered appliqué black-and-white gown from the new collection. Elizabeth also closed the Chanel SS2018 show this past fall.
Rumors of Lagerfeld’s final season
While there have been whispers anticipating Lagerfeld’s exit from the iconic French house for years, fashion insiders interpreted the location of the show in Lagerfeld’s hometown as a symbolic move that it would be his last for Chanel. Although nothing has been confirmed yet―and only time will tell if this was officially Lagerfeld’s last collection―the show’s finale was noteworthy because it involved a standing ovation, with nine-year-old mini muse Hudson Kroenig accompanying Lagerfeld for his final bow.END
