Our obsession today with the ’90s is no mere secret. It was a time of peak culture. Peak fashion. Peak celebrity. Peak, well, everything! Byredo’s Ben Gorham taps into this nostalgic zeitgeist in a new and high-speed way as he returns to Craig McDean’s early images of muscles cars for inspiration.
Revisiting the photographer’s works from the late ’90s—when he toured the US Bible Belt to document scenes of the North American bracket-racing circuit—Gorham crafted a limited edition capsule of handmade leather goods—from sour citrus bags to disco-dizzy wallets.
Out now, the collection titled Accelerated Culture combines dynamic forms with drag racing and a bold twist on the speed stripe. “It was based on this idea of pinstriping techniques that we found throughout American car culture,” explains Gorham “It was opportunity-based too, because it all came from seeing it through Craig’s eye.”
Originally revealed in the McDean’s 1999 book I Love Fast Cars, the series sees its own evolution in this new, never-before-seen film shown above, which the photographer created specially for Byredo’s Accelerated Culture release.END
