When CR cast the net for an issue filled with all-American girls, there was no question that the Bronx-born Kayla Scott had to be in the mix. Her look—with short hair, strong brow, and gap-toothed smile—fit perfectly with Carine’s vision of the new generation of American stars set to inspire the world, landing her directly on our cover alongside Gigi Hadid. She’s been gradually rising through the ranks of the modeling world since 2014, but Kayla first caught Carine’s attention whilst the pair were working on Tom Ford’s virtual fashion show with Lady Gaga and Nick Knight. We talked to Kayla about what a crazy trip it’s been so far:
How were you discovered?
“I was officially discovered after I submitted some photos to Ford Models. I just googled ‘model agencies’ and they popped up as number one, so I took what I now realize are some pretty horrific pictures and a very awkward ‘walk’ video and sent it to them. I guess something caught their eye because they called me in for a meeting almost immediately and signed me that same day.”
Did you always want to be a model?
“I never in a million years thought that I would be a model. I always thought I was way too rough and boyish, but I’ve found that the fashion world loves androgyny so they’ve actually embraced that side of me. It’s cool because I get to play different roles and be rough but feminine at the same time.”
How did you first come to work with Carine?
“I met Carine on set at the Tom Ford Spring 2016 video shoot and we really hit it off. She’s just such a cool, real chick. When my agents told me I was going to be on the cover of CR 8, I was elated cause everything Carine does is dope.”
What was it like shooting the cover for CR?
“My day on set was pretty easy and it was great because I really liked the clothes. I could see myself actually wearing some of the pieces which is something I don’t say too often. It’s really an honor to be in a magazine at all, but to get the cover is just icing on the cake so thanks!”
What does being an American girl mean to you?
“To me, being an American girl means being able to do anything that I want. It’s a freedom that so many women around the world don’t get so I never take it for granted. Women in American have never been more powerful than we are right now and I know it’ll just continue to grow until women everywhere are running the world.”
What are your career goals?
“My career goals are to just be comfortable and happy. I don’t have aspirations to be extremely rich or extremely famous. I just want to be able to keep me and my family afloat.”
What are people most surprised to know about you?
“People are always surprised to find out that I’m really interested in world history and science, particualry outer space. I’ve also been really into reading about the human brain recently. Did you know you only use less than half of your entire brain throughout you life? I’m interested in learning about why that is. Maybe I could’ve been a scientist if I had better concentration…”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“In my spare time I’m either sketching, drawing, or playing music. I have a lot of hobbies to keep me busy, but whenever I zone into one at a particular time it usually leads to something good.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“I try to live on a day-to-day basis, so I don’t really know where I see myself in ten years. Things happen everyday that you don’t expect and you stumble into things you never thought you would. I’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds for me.”
