Some models grow up dreaming of a life in front of the lens. Others enter the fashion world purely by chance. Missouri native Briley Jones falls into the latter, more accidental category. Her story goes that at age 18 she was content working on her family farm selling organic beef, but felt tired one day and decided to saunter into town to pick up a cup of coffee. Whilst getting her caffeine fix, she unkowingly caught the eye of a model agent. Eventually a mutual friend caught wind of the situation, put the two in contact, and Briley was signed to an agency. “I always say I was discovered through the grapevine,” she says. “One thing led to another and now I’m here.” Since that fateful trip, Briley has walked for Miu Miu, Coach, and Bottega Veneta, and is steadily building a portfolio of fashion editorials. Here’s her story:
What was your first memory of fashion?
“When I was little I would steal my mom’s bras and put snack pudding packs in the cups to fill it out. Then I would watch Madonna’s music videos for Express Yourself and Vogue and dance and strut around the house. I felt like a fashion queen.”
What was the first runway show that you walked in?
“For my first show, I walked exclusively for Bottega Veneta. I remember I was very calm, but also a little nervous because you had to walk in time with the strobe lighting. Kanye West passed right by me after the show, but I didn’t realize it was him until much later. I just remember thinking: ‘That man looks just like Kanye.’ Turns out, it really was.”
What’s been your favorite modeling career moment so far?
“Walking for Miu Miu during Paris Fashion Week is my favorite moment as a model so far. It was a very surreal.”
What is the best piece of modeling advice you’ve ever been given?
“The best piece of advice I’ve ever received was from my dad. He said: ‘You can do anything, keep your head high, and give ’em hell.'”
How do you stay in shape for your job?
“Growing up on a farm, I learned that you don’t have to go to a gym to get a good workout in. Even though I have a gym membership in New York now, I still like to get crafty and make up my own workouts in my apartment.”
Favorite beauty trick?
“A hot bubble bath with epsom salts and a dose of Mr. Bubbles. The salt helps detox and soften my skin, and the bubbles, well, who doesn’t like bubbles?”
Who are your role models?
“Allen Ginsberg and the beatniks of my generation are my role models. I pull inspiration and drive from multiple people, even complete strangers sometimes. Whoever I see who’s mad to live, and filled with a desire to do good, they become a model or mold that inspires me.”
What would people be most surprised to know about you?
“That’s hard to say because ever since I was little my mom has always told me that she’s never met anyone filled with as many surprises as me.”
Which actress would play you in a movie?
“Someone who’s not afraid to kiss girls.”
Who is your celebrity crush?
“I would usually tell you it’s Angelina Jolie, but I just watched Chicago so right now Catherine Zeta Jones takes the crown.”
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
“My most embarrassing moment was when I was explaining to the directors at Calvin Klein that I sell beef in Missouri and one of them said, “Oh, so you’re the farmer.” I looked as them with a straight face and said, “Yeah, I got beef.'”
What’s your favorite thing to do outside of modeling?
“In my spare time I love to draw all afternoon, type away on my typewriter, or take a walk to find street art that I haven’t seen yet.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“It’s a difficult question to answer because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you can make all the plans that you want, but life will do whatever it wants in the end. I’ll be 29 in ten years and I hope that by then I’m married to my soulmate and will possibly be a mom.”
What projects do you have on the horizon?
“Projects that will rock your world.”
