Kendall, Gigi, Alessandra, Rosie, Karlie, and Lily—so go the members of Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain Army that can be referred to by their first names alone. Yet it’s not only these celebrity models that are booked for their glossy hair, glowing skin, and toned limbs (did we mention that their legs are up to here?). Rounding out the runway numbers are another bevy of equally glamorous women that perhaps not everyone is on first name terms with—yet. Case in point: Twenty-one year old, French model, Cindy Bruna. Scoring a spot in Rousteing’s Army was just the next well-heeled step in Cindy’s modeling career, which has been steadily picking up speed over the last three years. To date, she’s walked for just about every fashion house in the alphabet, scored a spot in three Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows, and most recently, she’s been tapped by Rousteing as one of three faces for Balmain’s newly launched Hair Couture Atelier campaign. Here, Cindy shares what it takes to be climbing up the ladder to top modeldom:
What was your first memory of fashion?
“Growing up in Saint-Raphaël in the French Riviera, I didn’t know much about fashion at all. It wasn’t until my mother took me to Paris to do some test shoots for modeling that I started to learn. It was hard for me to understand the concept of what it meant to be a model initially, but eventually I was able to train my face to make the expressions that photographers want. I’m still in touch with the photographer of that first test shoot. Last year, he gifted me a photo of my mom and I on that first day and it felt really symbolic.”
How were you discovered?
“Just over three years ago I was scouted by a model agent in the South of France while I was on the beach. It wasn’t the first time that someone had told be that I could be a model, but it was the first time that I listened to why they thought I could do it. After that, I did the test shoot in Paris and signed a modeling contract with Metropolitan Management in France and Wilhelmina New York in the United States.”
When did you get your big break?
“My first huge booking was for Calvin Klein during the Spring 2014 collections at New York Fashion Week. It was my first-ever Fashion Week and they booked me as an exclusive. I remember that my agent called me, but didn’t explain what was happening. All she said was, ‘Cindy, I’ve cancelled all of your castings and you have to come into the agency.’ I was terrified because I thought I had done something wrong, so you can imagine my relief when I found out that it was actually because Calvin Klein had booked me.”
What has been your favorite modeling career moment so far?
“The first time Steven Meisel photographed me was incredible. I was so nervous because I had heard so many great things about him, but the day of the day of the shoot was amazing from beginning to end. It was for Vogue Italia and I remember being so impressed by his precision and skill.”
“I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many designers that I admire. I love Zac Posen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Elie Saab, and of course, Olivier Rousteing who I am happy to call a friend.”
Which makeup artists and hairstylists do you love to work with?
“I love working with Pat Mcgrath because she’s a true artist, Tom Pecheux because he gives the best beauty advice, and Orlanda Pita because he’s the kindest man in the fashion industry.”
Who is your role model?
“Naomi Campbell—forever and always.”
What is the best modeling advice you’ve been given?
“My mom has always told me to stay true to myself and it’s the best piece of advice that I’ve ever received. I’m not the kind of person that’s easily influenced, so I’m happiest when I follow my own heart and do what feels right for me.”
What do you do to stay in shape for your job?
“The key to being in good shape is to work out a lot. That way, you can eat whatever you want!”
Favorite beauty trick?
“I use eyeshadow on my lips. It might sound weird, but I mix it with a bit of lipstick and it allows me to create really unique colors.”
What would people be most surprised to know about you?
“Probably that my home in Saint-Raphaël was a farm and that my childhood was spent tending cows, chickens, and goats instead of playing video games.”
Which actress would you pick to play you in a movie?
“Kerry Washington, because she’s confident, powerful, and knows exactly what she wants—just like me.”
Who is your celebrity crush?
“Will Smith! I love his smile.”
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
“I can’t remember which show it was, but one Fashion Week I had to wear an entirely transparent outfit without any underwear. While I was walking, the only thing I could think is ‘everyone can see everything.’ It was pretty embarrassing, but at the same time quite exhilarating.”
Favorite place in the world and why?
“Paris is my favorite place in the world because it’s the city of fashion and the place where everything is possible. It’s also the capital of my country so bien sûr, que c’est ma ville favorite!”
What do you like to do when you’re not modeling?
“A perfect day off would start with a Pilates class, then I’d go to a hammam bath and have a scrub and a massage. Essentially, the entire day would involve other people taking care of me.”
What projects do you have on the horizon?
“I really want to put my energy towards helping women who are victims of domestic violence, so I’ve been looking into meaningful ways that I can donate both money and my time.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“In ten years time I hope to be happy, fulfilled, and married to the sexiest man in the world.”
