Learn the Latest Farrah Fawcett-Approved TikTok Trend

Forget curtain bangs, balayage, and blunt cuts — the “Farrah flip” is the new hair trend for summer. The 1970s-do has been circulating all over TikTok and it’s serving some serious curl volume.

For anyone who’s had the serious misfortune of never seeing the work of art that was Farrah Fawcett’s hair, we’re here to give you the crash course.

Fawcett’s fluffy locks first arrived on the scene along with her debut in the television show Charlie’s Angels. The 1976 classic and its team of female detectives became a global sensation not only for their transformation of gender roles, but for their “talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before” hair. This cast might have had the best hair to ever grace a tv-screen and while every Angel had their own signature hairdo, Fawcett’s trademark feathered waves caused the world to go running to their stylists to ask for the “Farrah.” Like the ’70s version of “The Rachel,” Jennifer Aniston’s iconic hairstyle in Friends, Fawcett’s hair took over the world and obviously its influence is still going strong.

Originating from user, Mallory Jade aka @groovy_mal, the 30-second hair transformation quickly wow-ed social media users (4.5 million to be exact) with its fluffy fabulousness. ’70s hairstyles have already been the talk of the town with celebrities and Insta influencers attempting Fawcett-inspired looks—but none have reached quite as much hype and height as this.

This isn’t your grandma’s technique. In just two simple steps and a dizzying final touch, Jade’s viral video uses a head shake (bordering on whiplash) to get the desired look. The eighteen-year-old’s hair hack starts with her brushing forward her disco curls before diving into a hair flip that seems both necessary and fun. Looking like she just walked off the set of Charlie’s Angels, the final result is a jaw-dropping masterpiece. Already this vintage transformation has been tested and approved by various TikTokers who all deserve the award for best hair.

If you’re looking to get this disco diva look, here’s what to do. If you want to achieve the most volume possible, getting a soft mullet or shag haircut would be step one. According to Allen Edwards, one of Fawcett’s hairdressers, there’s a secret to really get the Fawcett cut. “The layers around the face are shorter. What made it different was that it wasn’t full on top. It was flatter, and the ‘Farrah’ part was the edges, which went flipping back” said Edwards. If you aren’t ready for that level of commitment though, any hairdo should work just fine. Getting into the styling portion, all you need is a straightener and a round bristle brush — no hot curlers needed. Using the straightener, curl the ends of your hair up and away from your face until you get that iconic hair flick. Then, brush it all forward with the round brush and for the fun part just start hair flipping. Voila, instant “Farrah flip,” all you’ll need now are some platforms and bell bottoms and you’ll be ready for the disco.
