While graduation ceremonies were anticlimactic this year due to COVID-19, the class of 2020 still crossed the finish line, and against all odds. To celebrate the graduating class, Barack Obama gathered a slew of celebrity commencement speeches to form Dear Class of 2020, a virtual celebration that was live streamed on Sunday.
Filled with words of wisdom from public figures such as Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Billy Porter, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Janelle Monáe, Hasan Minhaj, Kerry Washington, and so many more, the video lasts about four and a half hours. Included are celebratory performances from the likes of Lizzo, Camila Cabello, and Chloe X Halle. Even the former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the former Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates make appearances.
The messages are replete with congratulatory sentiments, words of encouragement, and calls to action for the class of 2020 to recognize their potential in implementing the change we wish to see in the world during these trying times.
“We’ve seen that our collective hearts, when put to positive action, can start the wheels of change,” Beyoncé says in her commencement statement. “Real change has started with you, this new generation of high school and college graduates who we celebrate today.”END
