Burberry Joins Coronavirus Relief Efforts in the UK

START body

As factories around the world close due to global lockdowns and quarantine efforts in light of the coronavirus, Burberry is the latest to announce that it will be donating both surgical and non-surgical masks to healthcare workers and patients in the United Kingdom. On top of this, the British fashion house’s trench coat factory will be used to make non-surgical gowns and masks for patients under the supervision of medical authorities. Over 100,000 surgical masks will be donated to the National Health Service. The luxury brand also announced that it would be funding research at the University of Oxford for a single-dose vaccine, in addition to donating money to charities around the UK that help fight food poverty within the country.

“In challenging times, we must pull together,” Marco Gobbetti, CEO of Burbbery said. “The whole team at Burberry is very proud to be able to support those who are working tirelessly to combat COVID-19, whether by treating patients, working to find a vaccine solution or helping provide food supplies to those in need at this time. COVID-19 has fundamentally changed our everyday lives, but we hope that the support we provide will go some way towards saving more lives, bringing the virus under control and helping our world recover from this devastating pandemic. Together, we will get through this.”

Burberry joins Prada, Gucci, and Chanel, amongst other names in fashion, in repurposing idle factories to combat the shortage of surgical masks and personal protective equipment available to medical staff in their respective countries. As the pandemic spreads, more luxury brands are giving back and utilizing their resources for good, highlighting the philanthropic power of the industry.
