Eckhaus Latta is having a big year. The design duo earned an LVMH Prize nomination for its gender-neutral clothing and groundbreaking moments, including Maia Ruth Lee walking their Spring/Summer 2018 show while pregnant, meaning next week could be monumental. Now, making the brand’s future even more exciting, the Whitney Museum of American Art just announced it will present a solo exhibition focused on the young team in August.
In addition to this moment being major for its namesake brand, achieving its first museum spotlight after being founded just seven years ago, Eckhaus Latta: Possessed is a standout within the Whitney’s history. This will be the art museum’s first fashion-related show since 1997, when it hosted The Warhol Look: Glamour, Style, Fashion. It’s fitting that the progressive institution’s first sartorial vignette of this millennium examines a brand that has been breaking gender binaries since its start, aligning with the zeitgeist and feeling right at home in a city that’s ahead of the social norm curve.
Christopher Y. Lew and Laura London Freedman decided to work with Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta on the gallery as part of their emerging artist program. The duo’s work, which outspokenly examines identity while also remaining conscious of consumerism, plays with a wealth of current issues in a way the curators connect to visual artists’ methods.
The exhibition will not only contemplate Eckhaus Latta’s motives, but will think about the industry itself, including themes of advertising, voyeurism, and consumer culture. Photographs will theorize how the fairly new brand fits into established fashion media, and the installation’s core will be a space where visitors can interact with and shop exclusive clothing and accessories. Surveillance screens create a compelling finale, allowing guests to see those behind them in the exhibit and providing commentary on shopping experience.
Whether the Whitney will be highlighting newly minted LVMH Prize winners or simply a buzzy, progressive brand has yet to be determined, but regardless, this new exhibition promises to be a culturally relevant attraction.
Eckhaus Latta: Possessed will show at the Whitney Museum of American Art from August 3 through October 8, 2018.
