The link between physical performance and the human psyche is no secret. A morning treadmill session can become a death sentence after an evening of throwing back cocktails or binge watching the last few episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale. Of course, it makes—our bodies require rest in order to successfully perform. But what about those nights of standard slumber. Can traditional sleep be harnessed to better perform (and look better thereafter)?
According to a recent study by the University of California Los Angeles, yes. The project found that through coached sleep, subjects could increase their aerobic performance, decrease body fat percentage, and improve physical endurance. In essence, our dreams can bring our closer to our dream bodies.
Harnessing these findings, Equinox—home of fitness both high-fashion and high-tech—launches a new series of fitness programs related to behavioral sleep. Spanning the physical (from yoga classes and regenerative spa treatments) to the mental (meditation podcast and actual guided sleep coaching), the goal is to retrain the body to power down in order to obtain more power while active.
“The results of our trial are unequivocal” said clinical phycologist Jennifer Martin and member of Equinox’s Health Advisory Board, who contributed to UCLA’s study. “Sleep has been the missing part of the health and wellness conversation for decades and we’re proud to shed light on a topic that many people can benefit from.”
Equinox’s sleep coaching is available at 22 of its national locations now.END
