Italian actress and model, Monica Bellucci has been confirmed as mistress of ceremonies at the 70th Cannes Film Festival in May. She will be tasked with opening the festival and welcoming the jury. This year Spanish Director, Pedro Almodover will chair the jury who are responsible for determining which films walk away with prizes. Bellucci also will also preside over the closing ceremonies on May 28th, during which the winners will be announced, including that of the illustrious Palm d’Or.
Considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful women, the course of Belluci’s career has earned her comparisons to Sophia Loren. Like Loren, she began modeling as a young teen and had ascended to supermodel status by her mid-twenties. Aged 27, she transitioned into acting and quickly became one of Italy’s most-celebrated movie stars thanks to her discerning choice in roles. She’s starred in Matrix sequels, Mel Gibson’s acclaimed Passion of the Christ, and worked with directors to the tune of Spike Lee, Francis Ford Coppola, and Gaspar Noé. At 50, she became the oldest-ever Bond girl after director Sam Mendes cast her as Daniel Craig’s temptress in Spectre.
Bellucci has been mistress of ceremonies at Cannes before, but not since 2003. Her last film to appear at the festival was Alice Rohrwacher’s movie “Les Merveilles,” which walked the winner of the jury’s Grand Prix in 2014.END
