Netflix Announces Bridgerton Spin-Off Series For Queen Charlotte

Dearest Readers, your next Bridgerton fix is on the way — sort of.

Netflix recently announced that they will be releasing a spin-off series within the Bridgerton universe that will focus on the early life of Queen Charlotte before she married King George III. In season 1 of Bridgerton, viewers meet Queen Charlotte as a Lady Whistledown-reading, debutante-receiving, party-throwing figure who is well-established in her reign as queen. However, this limited series will focus on her origin story.

Netflix wrote, “All Hail The Queen! Thrilled to announce we’re expanding the Bridgerton universe with a limited series that will tell Queen Charlotte’s origin story—the series will also feature young Violet Bridgerton and young Lady Danbury.”

The highlighting of Queen Charlotte’s character comes as no surprise after Bridgerton made waves for casting Golda Rosheuvel to represent the Queen, who many believe was mixed-race and had African ancestry. The Netflix series created conversation around race and high society, as Bridgerton established right away that skin tone did not determine class standing in this particular universe. Lady Danbury is another Black character who holds societal power as an affluent Duchess, and we’re excited to see Netflix dive into more of her backstory as well.

With Shonda Rhimes leading the way, the series promises to be full of drama, love, gossip, and Regency-era fashion fit for Queen Charlotte’s extravagant character. In the meantime, Season 2 of Bridgerton is slated to be released in 2022 with a focus on Anthony Bridgerton (Regé-Jean Page will not be returning, much to everyone’s chagrin). Bridgerton has been confirmed for a third and fourth season as well.
