Prada has tapped into Euphoria breakout star Hunter Schafer as the fresh new face in their latest campaign featuring the Galleria Bag. The ever-dreamy, manic pixie It-girl plays dress-up by herself (and for herself) in playful Prada for a mini film by director Xavier Dolan and creative director Ferdinando Verderi, a minute-long exploration of curiosity and a revisiting of hope to create a new lens through which we can view the Galleria bag.
Schafer lounges in a lived-in room with overflowing dresser drawers, a crackling vintage TV displaying the classic Prada logo, and stacks of vintage books topped with peonies. A transparent, corded phone beeps a steady dial tone, long forgotten as the camera favors a blustery blue Galleria bag. Schafer inspects her smokey-eyed reflection in the mirror, holding dangly bling to her pierced ears.
Halfway through the video, the soprano tones come to a stop as Schafer audibly clicks on a Prada belt and the shot zooms out to reveal the actress on the set of a photoshoot. She leaps and twirls with the absolute freedom of someone who has no eyes on her, and yet, it’s hard to look away. Dolan and Verderi call us to remember what it is like to fall in love with fashion afresh, to revisit “the magic of the fashion industry [that] is easily overlooked, forgotten” and to be reminded of “the purity of those drams, that magic” according to their press release.
Schafer is youthful yet eternal, romantic but not docile, as she epitomizing the Prada girl who can’t help but reach for the perfect bag before she walks out the door. The Galleria is classic yet multi-faceted, meant to carry you (and to be carried) through an exploration of fashion that is both familiar and inspirational. The mini film plays into the sophisticated simplicity of the Galleria bag by showcasing it in multiple mini narratives, true to the nature of the bag’s real-life wearability and timeless silhouette.
