Blue Ivy Carter may only be eight years old, but her growing list of achievements in the music industry proves the young talent is a force to be reckoned with. Carter, the oldest child of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, has just been nominated for a 2020 BET Award for her performance in her mother’s song “Brown Skin Girl,” alongside Wizkid and Saint Jhn.
“Brown Skin Girl,” which first appeared on The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack, is also nominated for a BET Her Award, which recognizes neo soul and traditional R&B artists. The album was curated by Beyoncé and accompanied the photorealistic film adaptation of the Disney classic, for which the singer voiced Nala.
The song has proved a hit for Carter, who won a 2020 NAACP Image Award for “Brown Skin Girl” in February, her second major award. Last fall, she took home a songwriting trophy for the track at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards.
Carter is following in the footsteps of her famous family. In 2016, Beyoncé won the BET Her award for her anthem “Formation,” as did her sister Solange the following year for “Cranes in the Sky.” Perhaps no one is more outwardly excited for Carter than her grandmother, Tina Knowles. In an Instagram post in February, Knowles congratulated her granddaughter on the NAACP win, writing, “8 years old!!!! You are giving all the beautiful little brown girls a voice.”
The BET Awards will air on Sunday, June 28, at 8:00 p.m. EST on BET and CBS.END
