Without question Prince was an icon who deserved all of the praise, awards, and applause he was given. Luckily the late rocker, who would have been 60 today, was showered with love from fans and peers often. Seriously—he has an Academy award, several Grammys, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other accolades. But just because he was a veteran of award shows doesn’t mean things didn’t always go smoothly for him, as was the case with the 2007 Golden Globe awards, which he almost missed.
In 2007 the singer/songwriter/genius was nominated in the Best Song category for his piece “The Song of the Heart” from the movie Happy Feet. But when it was announced that he had won, Prince was nowhere to be found. It turns out that he was still stuck in traffic, and was running so late to the awards that he missed his category, so the presenter—Justin Timberlake—accepted the award on his behalf (while also taking a swipe at Prince’s height by crouching at the microphone).
Luckily, Prince managed to make it to the show, and when he finally arrived he was given his moment on stage, where he received a standing ovation from the room. He was also given an enthusiastic reception eight years later when he was a surprise presenter at the 2015 ceremony (naturally, he was presenting Best Song). It seems people really love to love Prince. Today the star’s legacy lives on through his music, giving us ways to continuously celebrate him—even when it’s not his birthday.END
