The excitement about the recent royal wedding has yet to die down, especially with speculation about where the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex will honeymoon. Perhaps we continue to be invested in the young couple because Meghan Markle’s story of Hollywood actress-turned-princess so closely resembles that of Grace Kelly—an icon people can’t seem to get enough of, even decades later. But Kelly’s fairy tale almost didn’t happen. The role of a lifetime was initially offered to none other than Marilyn Monroe, who would have turned 92 this week.
Apparently Aristotle Onassis (future husband of Jackie) suggested to Prince Rainier of Monaco’s advisors that a celebrity bride would do wonders to up the royal family’s international status. Monroe was allegedly the first choice, although she ultimately turned down the opportunity, instead choosing to intensify her efforts to be taken seriously as an actress. However on the day of the wedding, she apparently sent a telegram to Kelly that read: “I’m so happy you found a way out of this business.”
That being said, whether the invitation was ever actually extended to Monroe is up for debate. Onassis did suggest Monroe as a possible wife, but some sources claim that she was vetoed due to her “public image.” As for sending a note to Kelly? That has also been questioned, and to be honest, it doesn’t really seem like something she would do. In the countless biographies and films that have been released about her since her death, no one has ever implied that she was the type to throw shade.
Considering the pressures that Hollywood put on the blonde bombshell, we can’t imagine the royal life would have suited her anyway. Besides, she managed to achieve stardom in life, and a lasting legacy in death, all without a crown. Happy birthday, babe—you’re bigger than a princess, you’re a star.END
