Remember When Kim Gordon Started a Clothing Line?

START body

Kim Gordon is no stranger to the fashion world. The Sonic Youth front woman, who turns 65 this Saturday, is tight with Marc Jacobs (even playing one of his fashion shows) and the Opening Ceremony crew, has appeared in ads for Kenzo and Saint Laurent, and most recently, was featured in Rodarte’s Fall/Winter 2018 lookbook. Oh, and her daughter Coco is a pretty successful model. With all this fashion cred, does it really come as a surprise that Gordon has dabbled as a designer?

In 2009, the musician and artist created the line Mirror/Dash for Urban Outfitters, which was partially designed with “cool moms” in mind. “I’ve always been inspired by Françoise Hardy,” she said of the collection’s other muse. “She was one of the cooler French pop singers. I’m such a sucker for that south of France fresh style.”

Though created in collaboration with Jeffrey Monteiro and Melinda Wansbrough, Mirror/Dash came very much from Gordon’s world. Named after an experimental music project she did with then-husband Thurston Moore, Gordon wanted clothes that reflected her lifestyle, and even used one of her paintings for the hang tags. “I wanted a collection that had some association with the musical life I’ve had.”

Of course Mirror/Dash wasn’t Gordon’s first foray into fashion (she had a line in the ‘90s called X-Girl), nor was it her last. In 2012, she collaborated with French label Surface to Air on a capsule collection that was again inspired by Hardy and created with cool moms in mind. Considering that she has long been a style icon—with that effortless I-just-threw-this-on look only rock stars seem to have—it’s a no brainer that brands continue to tap her for collaborations. The only question is, who will she work with next?
