There aren’t a lot of reasons for Paris Hilton and Leonardo DiCaprio to compete, but most would certainly assume that the heiress would trounce the actor when it comes to luxury handbag shopping. As it would happen, DiCaprio is good at nearly everything he puts his mind to, purse acquisitions included.
In 2016, at the Heart Fund’s Generous People Dinner Gala in Cannes, the actor (who turns 43 tomorrow) out-bid Hilton on a precious Chanel handbag, paying a whopping ,000 for the item at the charity auction, before gifting it to his mother. News of the sale went viral, as did Hilton’s miss. Luckily it was all in good fun, and for a good cause.
If his decades in the public eye have proved anything, it’s that Leo is nothing if not generous. He founded The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation benefiting environmental causes in 1998, which has since supported 132 environmental organizations, and given out over million in grants for projects. He has also supported his friend Kate Winslet’s Golden Hat Foundation, which helps children with autism, and is a regular at Carine Roitfeld’s charity amfAR galas during Cannes. Recently, he donated million to hurricane Harvey relief.
While there are many heartwarming aspects to the Chanel bag story, we can’t help but find it amusing. Perhaps because it’s funny to visualize the two in some sort of accessories-based feud, throwing fistfuls of money at each other until one is crowned the victor. Or maybe it’s because shopping really should have been Hilton’s forte—after all, the persona she played on The Simple Life was that of an Olympic-level luxury consumer. DiCaprio certainly must have believed the latter, as a little over a year later he invited Paris to his own charity auction, benefiting his foundation. Presumably with DiCaprio in the auctioneer’s seat, Hilton was free to finally nab whatever her heart desired. Here’s to hoping he included some Chanel items, just for her.END
