What is most surprising about Jason Wu’s new collaboration with Diane Kruger on a capsule collection for his Grey line is not that it he tapped an actress to work with, but that he didn’t work with her sooner. As Kruger has been a fashion darling for years, and a muse and personal friend to Wu for nearly a decade, one could say her foray into design has been a long time coming.
“I’ve always admired Jason’s sense of style and his vision for women,” she tells CR. “He’s dressed me so many times over the years that it felt natural to collaborate with him on a few pieces that I’ve been dying to have in my wardrobe.”
The collection, which is out officially today, was originally conceived when Kruger and Wu were vacationing together in Tulum, Mexico. Inspired by vintage styles from the 1940s that touch on Kruger’s personal taste, the range of pieces offered—including velvet and lightweight knits, as well as an incredibly sexy bodysuit—have a timelessly-chic feel to them, and work well as both day and eveningwear.
“I sent him tons of references for what I imagined and then I showed up at his office and he sketched my ideas right there in front of me,” Kruger explains. “He was so accommodating. I asked for so many changes and details and he said ‘Whatever you want!’”
We first got word of the collection months ago when Kruger arrived at the Cannes premier of her film In the Fade (notable, as she first met Wu when he dressed her for the festival in 2009) wearing wide leg, high-waisted trousers and a knit tank from the collection, proving that Diane really did design with her own interests in mind. “The truth is, all the pieces are in my closet and I’m just waiting for the right moment to get to wear them,” she says. In case you’ve ever wanted to dress like the movie star (and really, who hasn’t?) now is officially your chance.
