A collection of Hollywood icon Vivienne Leigh’s personal belongings will be put up for auction later this year. The screen siren is most remembered for her Academy Award-winning role as Scarlett O’hara in Gone With the Wind.
Hosted by Sotheby’s, the auction will hit the bidding block in London on September 26th. Approximately 250-plus lots will be included in the catalogue. Jewelry, dresses, and accessories worn by Leigh are expected to sell for somewhere in-between £100 to £100,000—which equates to around 8 and 8,540 at today’s exchange rate.
Among the lots that stand out most include a gold ring from the actress’s second husband Laurence Oliver, a diamond encrusted bow pendant, and a sterling silver cigarette box. Film related memorabilia, like a wig Leigh wore in the 1951 film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire and an embossed copy of her Gone With the Wind script, are likely to be the major draw for movie collectors.
In a statement earlier today, Sotheby’s U.K. chairman Harry Dalmeny said that the auction gives the buyers the chance to “discover the real, and unexpected, Vivien Leigh,” as opposed to assuming who she is from the roles she chose to tackle throughout her career. “We’re all guilty of confusing our favorite actresses with the heroines they portray, of blurring Vivien’s identity with that of Scarlett O’Hara or Blanche DuBois,” he said. “But, behind the guise of the most glamorous and talked-about woman of her age we find a fine art collector, patron, even a book worm, who was the intellectual equal of the literati, artists and aesthetes she counted among her coterie.”
Before the auction begins, fans and prospective buyers can view a selection of the lots on offer at Sotheby’s in London from July 11th through to August 11th. On September 22nd, the full catalogue will be displayed in an exhibition in the same location.
