The French manicure can be traced back to the mid-‘70s, but it didn’t originate in a Parisian salon as its name may suggest. The two-tone mani created by Jeff Pink, founder of nail polish brand Orly, was born out of convenience for overwhelmed movie set workers who were previously stuck changing Hollywood starlet’s nail colors with each costume change. The simple design created a universally flattering style that went with any look. When he took the polish onto the runways of Paris Fashion Week, Pink coined it the French manicure.
Some 45 years later, the timeless design has remained a staple and also inspired an unlimited number of creative and colorful spin-offs. From neon colors to animal print tips, the French manicure has been remixed for today’s style stars. Here, CR explores fresh iterations of this typically traditional nail look from the likes of our favorite celebrities and professional nail artists.END
