Veronica Lake’s Hair History

START

From her breakout role in the 1940 film I Wanted Wings, Veronica Lake’s honey-blonde locks enchanted audiences. When her hair accidentally fell over her right eye during filming, her signature look was born. The peek-a-boo hairstyle became her trademark, and was widely copied as Lake became one of Hollywood’s favorites. Her influence was so great that, when the U.S. entered World War II, she was pressured to trade her long, silky locks for a cropped style to encourage women in the war effort to adopt safer hairstyles (long hair was at the risk of getting caught in machinery). Unfortunately, after she made the chop, Lake’s career began to falter as she took on lackluster movies and struggled with personal vices, and by the mid-‘50s she left the film world altogether. Her legacy in Hollywood lives on, however, as her hair continues to be remembered for its distinct, trend-setting beauty. On what would have been the actress’ 97th birthday, take a glimpse back to her best hair moments.
