Originally created by Italian Princess Marcella, the now 60 year-old skincare and cosmetic line Borghese began with natural ingredients found near the Villa Borghese in Rome.
As a Princess, Marcella was expected to adhere to royal codes, but instead chose to lead a fulfilling life as a business woman, a beauty trailblazer, and muse to many. To carry on the next chapter in the company’s history, the house of Borghese has found a modern-day Italian “princess” of its own, model Mariacarla Boscono, to be its new ambassador.
For Italians, skincare has always been a passion that dates back 2,000 years—around the time the Romans built the first public baths. The brand’s rebirth honors that heritage while building upon Princess Marcella’s original goal: to include products that are inspired by nature. As for Mariacarla, her own Italian mother always told her how important it is to take care of your skin, a vital tip for a burgeoning model.
“I grew up with my mum bringing me to Terme di Stigliano which is just outside Rome,” Mariacarla recounts. “We would exfoliate an then they apply a Fango all over the body; that’s how I know Borghese from back in the day. So when Borghese approached me, it was a dream come true. It’s a brand that I know, a brand that I associate with.”
As mentioned, Borghese’s creator was a muse to many, Boscono included. “I feel that I relate to Princess Marcella, in a way. Marcella was such an advanced princess, she didn’t need to work, but she did and she loved it. I relate to her as a more advanced kind of woman—someone who is multi-faceted.” Boscono began modeling at the age of 18 and has led worldy life of her own, having lived in America, England, France, and Kenya apart from her home in Rome. Despite lacking royal roots, the new legacy she’s building for Borghese is one that the Princess would surely approve of.END
