This week, Colson Baker, better known by his stage name Machine Gun Kelly, launched his very own nail polish line. In recent years, the rapper has become a style maven, frequently experimenting with different silhouettes and beauty looks that seem to get more and more bold, complex, and creative each time he steps out. In particular, vibrantly colored nails have become a signature accent to each of his looks, as he aptly matches his polish to his outfit each time he steps out. Considering this, a line of bright and … nail polish seems like a natural next-step.
Dubbed UN/DN LAQR, the brand is designed to be genderless, celebrating the shifting norms around gendered dressing and beauty practices. The initial collection features a wide range of shades, with each being as cool and edgy as the next. A bubblegum pink named “Party Favor,” a jet black called “Depressionist,” and a bright emerald green entitled “Mary Jane” all pay homage to the bold pop punk aesthetic that MGK is tapping into with his current aesthetic and music. On the other hand, “Sandstorm,” a soft beige, and “Bad Tendencies,” a very light blue, are perfect for those seeking a more demure nail.
In his creation of UN/DN LAQR, MGK has become yet another male celebrity to actively engage with the world of nail polish. Rapper Lil Yachty debuted his own nail art line, dubbed Crete in December 2020, while Harry Styles dropped Pleasing, a genderless beauty brand, on November 14 of this year. Needless to say, MGK’s new line will contribute to and help further the conversation of doing away with gender norms in the beauty realm. However, with a host of colors based on his effortlessly edgy and cool aesthetic, there is no doubt that he is crafting a space in the nail art industry that is his own.
