If the smell of sunscreen immediately transports you to beach days and sunny afternoons because you only reach for your SPF during the summer, we hate to break it to you but you’re doing SPF all wrong. Any self-proclaimed sunscreen addict worth their salt (ie. not Gwenyth Paltrow) knows that SPF 30 or higher is the holy grail of preventative anti-aging. Simple enough, right?
Apparently not. The 2020 RealSelf Sun Safety Report found that only 11% of Americans wear sunscreen daily — and 46% never wear sunscreen. If you’re part of the 46% who haven’t touched a bottle of SPF in a long, long time and are looking to change that, experts recommend using ¼ teaspoon of sunscreen on your face. Proper application is ideally applying your sunscreen in the morning as the last step of your skincare routine and then re-applied every two hours for maximum protection.
While one extra step in your morning routine won’t require you to spend an exorbitant amount of time in front of your bathroom mirror, the process of finding the perfect sunscreen might prove to be slightly more time-consuming. At the end of 2020, it was revealed that the K-Beauty cult-favorite Purito Centella Unscented Sun SPF 84 sunscreen only provided an SPF of 19. The brand faced backlash for their misleading marketing and formulation errors. This led to an increase of brands testing the accuracy of their SPF claims for Purito ex-fans looking for a new go-to sunscreen. Other cult-favorite Korean skincare brand Krave Beauty recently discontinued their Beet Shield sunscreen indefinitely after the brand underwent SPF performance testing for the sake of transparency. Krave is also known for their Great Barrier Relief skin-soothing serum, a go-to product for restoring damaged moisture barriers and bringing reparation to irritated, dehydrated skin.
Thankfully, despite the recent uptick in SPF uncertainty, there are still a whole slew of sunscreens out there that cater to a variety of needs. Whether you’re looking for something moisturizing for extra-dry skin, something reef-safe, or a chemical sunscreen that won’t leave a white cast on darker skin tones, here is a round-up of our favorite sunscreens for any (and all) occasions.END
