Erdem Moralioglu has forayed into the world of cosmetics, with his penchant for ornate blooms inspiring the dreamy hues that pigment the eye, cheek, and lip palettes that define his latest collaboration with Francois Nars.
“My goal was for the makeup line to reflect all of the strange shades and textures that exist in the flower world,” Erdem tells CR. The name of the collection, Strange Flowers, encompasses the vision that guided Erdem in his creative process that yielded two eyeshadow palettes, one matte lip powder palette, six lipsticks and two blushes, as well as a highlighting pencil and blotting papers. “The Poison Rose Lip Powder Palette is actually one of my favorites,” he says. “It touched on early memories of my mother putting on this bright vibrant red lip.”
An exquisite blend of luxury, femininity and practicality, every product is encased in soft-touch packaging that comes in one of three original prints designed by Erdem. These prints emulate those of which adorn the textiles of his ornate collections every season.
Nars x Erdem took two years to develop, and judging by the curation of cosmetics that has bloomed from it, the designer and cosmetics developer carefully considered each color in this collection’s cohesive narrative. Inspired by spring, summer, fall, and winter, the diverse yet balanced color palette came to fruition when Erdem focused on seasonal plants and the ways in which their varied tones could harmonize in one collection.
From a whisper light pink, “Moon Orchid” to a potent plum, “Wild Flower,” the lipstick hues represent the paradox of delicacy and strength woven through the nuances of femininity, a consistently underlying theme of Erdem’s creations. “The juxtaposition between the delicate and the bold will always be present in my work,” the designer says. “I think it’s represented in this collection beautifully.”
The same can be said of the eye palettes, which offers jewel tones, such as a jade green “indio” and cool tones, like ivory “mythios,” suited to enhance a variety of features.
The Nars x Erdem collection is now available online and at Nars boutiques. Select styles such Voodoo Lily, Larkspur, and Wild Flower will be available at Sephora starting April 30, 2018.
