FEN (Far East Network) er et musikalsk improprosjekt satt sammen av en gruppe med musikere fra ulike deler av Su00f8ru00f8st-Asia. Kvartetten bestu00e5r av Otomo Yoshihide fra Japan, Ryu Hankil fra Korea, Yan Jun fra Kina og Yuen Chee Wai fra Singapore. FEN (Far East Network) is an improvised music project group made up of musicians from different parts of Asia. The quartet comprises Otomo Yoshihide (Japan), Ryu Hankil (Korea), Yan Jun (China) and Yuen Chee Wai (Singapore). FEN was started by globally renowned musician Otomo Yoshihide and it made its debut 2008 at MIMI Festival in Marseilles, France. Following its debut, FEN has performed extensively throughout Europe and all across Asia. Each member is an artist who works individually in the experimental music scene in his respective country. FEN pursues ‘performing together by improvisation’ as a method and ‘music without ends’ as an outcome. While FEN is an improvisational music group it is at the same time an idea or concept which hopes to maintain unique aesthetics and sustainable relationships in diverse Asian cultures. FEN’s activities explore aesthetic possibilities in new forms of music which are different from the Western world. FEN’s goals are to become a foundation and to organise diverse meetings to support other sustainable networks and cultural exchanges among many other experimental musicians and artists in and throughout Asia. FEN further hopes to work with musicians and artists of other disciplines, traditional and contemporary, from all across Asia.

She plays on many different types of bass, including the gigantic octobass, and has a natural drive towards pushing borders of improvisation and self expression.

Halldis Ru00f8nning from Bergen, Norway is a conductor and violinist. She has conducted countless world premieres and contemporary pieces in concerts and festivals in Europe and Scandinavia. She received her first price for her conducting skills already at the age of 18, and has later conducted for all of Norway’s symphony orchestras, but also a orchestras and ensembles in Sweden, the Netherlands and Vietnam.

In recent years Halldis has gradually moved towards a more creative platform, exploring improvisation with orchestras, composition and collaborative art projects across disciplines. Following intuition and sensations, she is interested in expanding the conductor’s movements into a more performative role in stronger relation to other art forms.

Julie Desprairies is a renowned French choreographer and architect who lives in Paris and works with her company in Lyon. Julie creates participatory choreographic projects for architectural structures. Based on a detailed study of the site and the architect’s intentions, she makes the dancers explore the properties of the space with their bodies u2013 often including users and inhabitants of the spaces. Her creations are of varying scales and can be for a building, a neighbourhood, a city or a landscape. These creations take different forms, from performances and shows, to films and exhibitions, as well as radio broadcasts. Julie has for instance made a film in La Villeneuve de Grenoble, where 80 school children, residents, shopkeepers and people who visit the neighbourhood were the performers. She has also made a play, Paris u00e0 l’infini (la danse), for 200 municipal employees in Paris that was shown all night at the Nuit Blanche festival. To Julie it is a question of making the movement of places visible. Julie is a professor at the Paris-Malaquais School of Architecture. She is also the author of two books on choreography and dance.
